Frequent Headache
There are many different types of headaches and many different causes. In many people genetics play a role – predisposition to having headaches seems to run in families. This does not mean that every member of the family will be affected or that those who do have headaches will have very similar headaches. You may born with genetic predisposition to having headaches, but never have one if you avoid potential triggers. Some people will get a headache only if they are exposed to more than one trigger. For example wine can be a trigger, but only when the person is under stress, while the same wine will not cause a headache on vacation. Lack of sleep is another common trigger and if combined with bright lights or noise is much more likely to cause a headache.
This makes it difficult to identify triggers, because on one occasion wine causes a headache, on another it does not. Keeping a detailed diary can help. Other common triggers include monthly hormonal fluctuations in women, weather changes, caffeine, food preservatives, MSG, aspartame, smoked, cured, pickled, and marinated foods. Another cause, or rather trigger, is too much sleep. Dehydration and hunger are also major contributing factors.
At times the cause of headaches is a head injury, medical illness, such as flu, Lyme disease, and other infections, thyroid disease, gluten intolerance, magnesium and vitamin deficiencies. Exposure to carbon monoxide, household chemicals, tobacco smoke, and other toxic fumes can also cause headaches.
Many people who suffer from headaches are very concerned that a brain tumor or an aneurysm may be causing their headaches, but fortunately these are rare.
